Description
Sistine Revisited draws from Michelangelo’s figures in the Sistine Chapel, bringing together imagery associated with Creation and figures from the larger biblical narrative of the ceiling.
Rather than reconstructing a particular scene, I use these figures as a starting point for exploring the human experience. The body can embody beauty and strength, but also vulnerability, struggle, and torment. Michelangelo’s monumental figures carry all of these qualities for me.
Through my mixed-media process, the figures are reconstructed within layers of color, texture, monoprinting, and expressive mark-making. Forms emerge from the surface and then begin to dissolve back into it. The space surrounding them becomes less architectural or narrative and more psychological—an active field in which creation, beauty, suffering, and human existence coexist.
The original imagery provides the foundation, but the process allows me to encounter these familiar figures differently. Sistine Revisited is ultimately less about retelling Michelangelo’s biblical narrative and more about using it to explore the complicated beauty of being human.
