Description

Bronzino’s Limbo takes its inspiration from Agnolo Bronzino’s Descent of Christ into Limbo, reimagining the densely intertwined figures of the Renaissance painting through my mixed-media process.

I begin with a watercolor drawing, then reconstruct the image through monoprinting, layered paint, and direct mark-making. As the process develops, figures emerge from and disappear into the surface. Some remain recognizable while others dissolve into passages of color, texture, and abstraction.

What interests me is not reproducing Bronzino’s painting, but discovering what happens when a familiar historical image is subjected to a different way of making. The original composition becomes a starting point rather than a destination. Bodies, gestures, and relationships are transformed through the physical process of building the surface.

The result exists somewhere between representation and abstraction—retaining the monumentality and human energy of Bronzino’s figures while allowing the materials and process to create a new visual experience.
